What does it feel like to be supported?
In the decision to leave the comfort of NYC - I've thought about this question a lot.
I used to keep hoards of friends so I felt secure, but the depth of those friendships were shallow. It took me a long time to learn the difference between quality over quantity. I spent most of 2017 shedding old ideas and relationships. Some things have to shift in order for new things to emerge.
My soul was energetically called to Sequoia National Park a couple weeks ago after a Breathwork training. The feeling felt bizarre but once my car turned a corner and two 300ft trees stood in front of me - I was brought to tears. These massive redwoods unapologetically grow without fear of taking up space and thrive in their ever changing environment.
While hiking, I overheard a park ranger telling a small group about the root system of the trees and how they are shallow even though the trees cascade 300+ feet into the sky. The roots intertwine with one another and provide support for each other.
It made me pause and think about my human root system. Who do I depend on? I put my hand on the Sequoia and felt its gentle strength. I was completely disconnected from the outside world but felt unified with so many distinct souls all at once.
I have always prided myself on being a loner - but in reality, I have thrived in adulthood by leaning on those around me.
My root system is deeply intertwined with souls across this country and I couldn't be more grateful. When I made the decision to leave NYC not a single person gasped in disgust. Each individual asked me how they could be helpful.
To cultivate relationships like this takes a lot of work and maintenance. I have grown close to people by being vulnerable and by listening. Years ago, someone close to told me that I had an ice cube around my heart - I'm grateful today that the ice cube has melted and I've allowed an exchange of love to flow in and out. I thrive today because of the people in my life.
I invite you to think about your root system -
Who is always there for you?
Who gives you the strength to grow tall and shine?
Reach out to them today and send them some love.
